BIO

My name is Joshua Cook, a Chicago-based portrait and figurative painter whose work captures the authentic and multifaceted stories of human connection. My artistic journey began in childhood, drawing inspiration from my community, family, and the rich cultural narratives of African American life. Over the years, this passion has evolved into a focused practice that bridges personal storytelling with broader cultural identity.

Through my art, I aim to celebrate the beauty of everyday life while illuminating the nuanced layers of identity, memory, and relationships. My current direction involves creating bold, emotionally resonant figurative portraiture that reflects the lived experiences of my subjects and myself. Each piece is a deeply personal yet universally relatable reflection of connection, whether it’s a shared moment with a loved one or an intimate portrayal of self-discovery.

I hold a Bachelor of Arts in Graphic Design from Hampton University, which has given me a strong foundation in composition, storytelling, and visual communication. Over the years, I have honed my skills in both traditional and digital media, using tools like Procreate and Adobe Creative Cloud alongside oil and acrylic paint to bring my vision to life.

What sets me apart is my unwavering commitment to authenticity and emotional depth. Whether I am capturing the resilience of my mother, or the joy of a neighborhood scene, my work is deeply rooted in lived experience. I am inspired by the vibrancy of Chicago, the support of my family, and the legacy of African American culture, and I strive to reflect these influences in every piece.

I approach my artistic journey with humility, dedication, and a deep appreciation for art’s power to inspire and connect.
